The mandate of the Associate Chair of Equity and Diversity (ACED) is to measure and address inequities within the Department of Medicine by gender, ethnicity/race, sexual orientation and disability.
Current initiatives underway:
- Biennial survey of faculty, next due in January 2023
- Equity checklist for all new faculty recruits
- Standardized advertising and interview process for leadership positions
- Unconscious Bias training for chairs of selection committees
- Equity, diversity and inclusion statement for new recruits
- Testing a novel method for reducing bias and avoiding groupthink in selection procedures, called DaVne, led by Dr. William Harper.

Background: Diverse health care leadership teams may improve health care experiences and outcomes for patients. We sought to explore the race and gender of hospital and health ministry executives in Canada and compare their diversity with that of the populations they serve.

The 2022 Women’s Symposium will be a venue where we can bring together all individuals (both women and their allies) to consider how we might close the persistent gender gap within our work environments.
Overall learning objectives
By the end of the event, participants will be able to:
- Articulate key issues facing women in academia, leadership, healthcare and society
- Add new skills to their toolkit for approaching key barriers that women face in academia, leadership, healthcare and society
- Navigate the intersectionality’s of gender and other identity constructs to form meaningful collaborations and allyships
- Empower allies across McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences and in surrounding healthcare communities to take action to advance women’s roles in health and healthcare
All faculty members who identify as women and allies of women within the Faculty of Health Sciences (and beyond) are invited to join us.
In our commitment to celebrating Black Excellence, addressing the injustices faced and amplifying the voices and narratives across the Black community, the Faculty of Health Sciences, in collaboration with members from Departments of Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Medicine, Health Research Methods, Evidence & Impact (HEI) and the Schools of Nursing and Rehabilitation Science, have put together an array of events to celebrate Black Excellence during the month of February. The theme of Black History Month in Canada this year is “February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day”. As such, we recognize that these dialogues are not just limited to the month of February and will continue to work to sustain these across the Faculty going forward.

Dr. Sandre is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at McMaster University with additional training in Vascular Medicine. Dr. Sandre is currently enrolled in the Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program at Maastricht University, and has a Master of Science in Global Health from McMaster University (2015) with a specialization in health services access. Dr. Sandre attends on the in-patient and out-patient General Internal Medicine and Thrombosis services at Hamilton General Hospital. Within Hamilton Health Sciences and the Division of Hematology and Thromboembolism, Dr. Sandre also provides Vascular Medicine care to patients with arterial and venous thrombosis, arteriopathies, and high-risk primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Sandre has developed clinical and academic expertise in vascular care of gender diverse patients and exploring the relationship between cardiovascular disease and gender-affirming hormone therapy.

This survey had a very good response rate of 74% with 253 responses. The infographic shows the profile of respondents by division, gender, rank and ethnicity. It includes the proportion of respondents who have received formal training in unconscious bias (57%) and equity and diversity (55%).
COVID-19 Learn More (PDF)
A majority of faculty expressed their significant about acquiring COVID and the impact of the COVID pandemic on their clinical practice and scholarly activities. Furthermore, the transition of managing working from home, care of dependents and homeschooling children was reported as substantial. We also observe the excess burden of hours spent doing the job and burnout reported by female faculty.

Our Department 2019 Learn More (PDF)
The equity and diversity survey was administered in January 2019. This survey was undertaken to better understand issues of equity, diversity and professionalism within our department. The survey was administered to all geographically full-time (GFT) faculty by email in an anonymous fashion. The response rate was 60%, with199 our of 330 responding.

Currently, the department does not have any Indigenous faculty members. Our learning comes from involvement with the Indigenous Health Initiatives in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Dr. Sandre is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at McMaster University with additional training in Vascular Medicine. Dr. Sandre is currently enrolled in the Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program at Maastricht University, and has a Master of Science in Global Health from McMaster University (2015) with a specialization in health services access. Dr. Sandre attends on the in-patient and out-patient General Internal Medicine and Thrombosis services at Hamilton General Hospital. Within Hamilton Health Sciences and the Division of Hematology and Thromboembolism, Dr. Sandre also provides Vascular Medicine care to patients with arterial and venous thrombosis, arteriopathies, and high-risk primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Sandre has developed clinical and academic expertise in vascular care of gender diverse patients and exploring the relationship between cardiovascular disease and gender-affirming hormone therapy.
