Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Medicine within the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. The mission of the Department of Medicine is to provide outstanding clinical care, to provide superlative education and to maintain our position as a world-leading centre for research and innovation. With almost 330 full-time faculty, and more than 520 non-geographically full-time (GFT) faculty, the department consists of 18 divisions spanning the breadth of internal medicine. We provide our services to the people of Hamilton, St. Catharines and the Kitchener Waterloo area, as well as other regional centres. We work closely with our hospital partners at the Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, the Niagara Healthcare System and other regional partner institutions to deliver excellent clinical care, framed in the context of academic inquiry.
As the largest department in the Faculty of Health Sciences, we are acutely aware of our role as an academic and clinical leader. Included in our faculty are some of the most productive researchers in the world, focusing on clinical trials and evidence interpretation that guide the care of patients everywhere. Our culture of inquiry supports our fundamental commitment to evidence-based practice, informed by decades of advanced clinical care. Our core residency training program is nationally recognized for excellence and our subspecialty residency programs, Area of Focused Competence (AFC) programs and fellowship programs provide basic and advanced clinical training for learners across the breadth of internal medicine and its subspecialties. Our educators also provide direct support for our various affiliated schools and departments and the broader McMaster University mission.
Research is core to our success. Spanning the spectrum from basic science (with a particular focus on respiratory disease, gastroenterologic diseases and hematological disorders) through animal, early phase and late phase clinical trials, our faculty generates the evidence that informs medical progress. Working closely with our affiliated institutes and centres, we have an ability to perform late phase, large clinical trials that are unrivalled in Canada. We have an extensive infrastructure that allows us to develop and use cutting edge research methodology to summarize, grade and disseminate the cumulative evidence generated by ourselves and others. Finally, the recently launched McMaster University Textbook of Internal Medicine allows us a convenient, free-to-access vehicle through which anyone can access our faculty’s work.
The Department of Medicine takes its commitment to excellence and its position as the clinical, educational and research leader within the Faculty of Health Sciences, and of McMaster University, very seriously. The commitment of the department is to maintain and build our excellence while remaining aware of our fortuitous position as the provider of care to South Central Ontario.
