Dr. Rick Adachi is a professor of medicine at McMaster University and a staff rheumatologist at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. He is also the inaugural holder of the Alliance for Better Bone Health Chair in Rheumatology. He is a graduate of McMaster University and has received his fellowship in Internal Medicine and in Rheumatology. Dr. Adachi is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of Osteoporosis Canada and is a member of the Council of Scientific Advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). Recently he was re-elected to the IOF Board of Directors. Dr. Adachi has conducted many clinical trials and has published extensively on a wide variety of therapies for the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal and corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis. He has participated in epidemiologic research assisting in the development of large databases looking at a wide variety of risk factors and therapies in osteoporosis. Dr. Adachi has participated in the development of guidelines for the treatment of primary and corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis in Canada. Dr. Adachi was awarded the First Annual Phillip Rosen Award in Rheumatology when he completed his training in Rheumatology. More recently Dr. Adachi was awarded the Lindy Fraser Award by Osteoporosis Canada. In 2006, he was awarded the Alliance for Better Bone Health Chair in Rheumatology at McMaster University and received the North American Menopause Society award for Innovation in Osteoporosis Research.

Research Interests: The Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (random sample of 10,000 subjects followed for 10 years to assess risk for osteoporosis and fractures); the structural analysis of bone and cartilage in bone and cartilage as measured by pQCT and pMRI; clinical trials in osteoporosis.

Dr. Allen’s undergraduate education was at Oxford University in England and at the Royal London Hospital. After postgraduate training which led to the MRCP (UK) diploma in General Internal Medicine Dr. Allen completed fellowship training in respiratory medicine at McMaster University. This was followed by a Canadian MRC research fellowship in clinical exercise physiology at McMaster. He joined the consultant staff at the Firestone Institute in 1984.

McMaster University’s Dr. Sonia Anand was only 33 years old when she landed the Eli Lilly Canada-May Cohen Chair in Women’s Health. Although her present research involves the environmental and genetic determinants of vascular and peripheral vascular disease in populations of varying ancestral origin, she is most recognized for her research on women’s health issues, particularly in the area of cardiovascular disease. The care and treatment of women’s cardiovascular disease, unique in its latent and non-specific symptoms, must differ from the standard employed for men to be successful, and Dr. Anand’s research is innovative in making this a priority.

As a Professor with the Department of Medicine and a member of the Leadership Council of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada’s Heart Truth campaign, Dr. Anand has helped give women the tools they need to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. Studying the differences associated with each gender’s symptomatic experience of heart disease, Dr. Anand aims to clarify the way in which social factors interact with biological factors to impact cardiovascular health.

Dr. Anand is also the Principal Investigator of two large genetic association studies, including the CIHR/HSFO funded EPiDREAM study of 22,000 people from 21 countries. Complementing this research, Dr. Anand teaches clinical epidemiology courses in methodology and cardiovascular disease at McMaster University with the hope of influencing future generations of doctors to be mindful of women’s health matters.

Daniel Brandt Vegas is a Clinician Educator in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. He received his MHPE from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is currently focused on developing a novel program evaluation strategy for post-graduate medical education programs to increase the amount and quality of data gathered and enable advanced analyses to inform goal focused, achievable program specific strategic plans. He is the deputy program director for the Clinician Educator AFC diploma program at McMaster University. 

His other interests are systems improvement, end of life care, and clinical reasoning. Daniel is mainly focused on the interface between clinical practice and medical education scholarship, and the tension that exists between the pressing urgency of the clinical world and the growing body of science in different areas of medical education. 
Daniel’s role as a Clinician Educator, and world view in general, are largely informed by his erratic background in life, making his way from his native Venezuela, eventually zig-zagging up to McMaster.

Daniel strongly believes in language, in a broad sense. This is often the source of arguments, but also many interesting conversations.

Dr Clase is a nephrologist and epidemiologist.  She is medical lead for the kidney transitional program, providing continuity of care to adolescents transitioning from pediatric to adult care. Dr. Cox qualified in 1981 from UCD, Ireland. He trained in respiratory medicine at McMaster University and continued training in basic science at McMaster University and at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He joined the faculty at McMaster University in 1992 where he continued his research into the basic mechanisms that control inflammation during respiratory diseases. Currently, he is Head of Acute Clinical Services at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. In addition, he is President of the Canadian Thoracic Society.

Research Interests: Mechanisms of disease and development of novel strategies for diagnosis and therapy based on improved understanding of how respiratory diseases arise. Current projects examine the accumulation of cells during pulmonary inflammation and the structural consequences of chronic inflammation. Clinical research examines the potential for lung cancer to be detected using the examination of sputum. In collaboration with Dr. John Miller of the Division of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Cox is examining the potential role of bronchial thermoplasty (a bronchoscopic procedure) as a treatment for asthma.

Research Interests: Exploring ways of improving the way that we use our current anticoagulant drugs, including exploring established and novel interventions to mitigate bleeding and anticoagulant drugs in high-risk patient populations; Developing systematic reviews of key questions in hematology and thrombosis and basing guidelines on those reviews.

Research Interests: Dr. Curnew’s research interests include risk factor modification in both healthy patient and in patients with atherosclerosis. He has developed a keen interest in better strategies to improve compliance. He is involved in several ongoing studies and sits on multiple advisory boards.

Professor Myrna Dolovich has been active in aerosol research for the past 40 years. Graduating from McGill University with a degree in electrical engineering, she worked, in the early years of her career, with renowned pulmonary physiologists Drs Joseph Milic-Emili and David Bates to expand our understanding of regional ventilation in the normal and diseased lung using gamma scintigraphic methods.  Similar imaging techniques were applied to establish the methodologies currently used for assessing distribution of inhaled therapeutic aerosols in the lung. At St Joseph’s Hospital and McMaster University, working with Drs M Newhouse, J Sanchis and G Coates, she studied deposition and mucociliary clearance from the lung using these scintigraphic methods, also assessing performance of therapeutic inhalers for delivering drug to the lungs of asthmatics, cystic fibrosis and COPD patients. Development of the Aerochamber™ for patient use was a focus of early research for the St Joseph’s Hospital Aerosol Group. Most recently, newer 3D imaging methods, namely positron emission tomography (PET), have been applied to assess the sites of inflammation in patients as well as mapping deposition patterns of inhaled aerosols in 3D.

Other Activities

Aerosol School, 3-day teaching program with practical laboratory experience in aerosol basics, aerosol measurements and techniques and applications to research and pharmaceutical laboratory and clinical settings was established by Dolovich in 2009 with support from the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM). It has become an annual program and is currently scheduled for October 2015.

Myrna has served on the Board of Directors of ISAM and is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery and Pediatric Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. She is a member of the Health Canada Scientific Advisory Committee – Respiratory and Allergy Therapies (SAC-RT), joining in 2006. Research Interests: Research interests involve the in vitro and in vivo characterization of vaccine and medical aerosols from various types of drug delivery systems; use of both 2D and 3D PET imaging modalities to investigate factors which influence the deposition and distribution of aerosolized drugs in the lung. A related interest is the investigation of epithelial cell cilia function and structure utilizing nasal and bronchial cilia obtained from patients with various respiratory diseases. The data provides an assessment of the ability of the lung to clear secretions as well as the effects on this key lung defence mechanism of a variety of traditional and experimental therapies. Cell culture using human bronchial and nasal epithelial primary cells have been established to provide model systems for investigating disease mechanisms.
