Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology – Research

Research

Despite our small numbers, we continue to be successful in attracting research funding largely because of a very wide collaborative network within medicine, pharmacy, epidemiology, health technology assessment, and the social sciences. Amongst our members, several million dollars’ worth of research grants and personnel funding are held. These come from a variety of sources, including the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), Ontario Ministry of Health, Health Canada, local hospitals, and professional associations. Our graduate and undergraduate students continue to receive recognition awards for their high-quality research.

Our research topics focus on the benefits, harms, economics and perceptions of drug therapies. Studies are aimed at improving the quality of prescribing and medication utilization, including randomized management trials, observational studies using large health databases, systematic and scoping reviews, and qualitative studies. We lead projects examining the impact of electronic medical record-based decision support for medications, the impact of changes in drug policies on health and health care utilization, patient preferences regarding therapies, improving the quality of high-risk medication management for patients in transitions, cost-related medication nonadherence, and methods to assess individual benefit and harm. As well as scholarly papers and presentations, members of the division hold multiple copyrights and patents on research products, software, reports and guidances.

Our research benefits from direct practice and policy impact, given our many drug policy contacts in government, patient safety, and health technology assessment organizations.
