Hematology & Thromboembolism – Education

Programs in Hematology & Thromboembolism at McMaster

Division members make important educational contributions at all levels, including clinical mentorship of medical students, internal medicine residents, residents from specialty programs, and clinical fellows; supervision at the Masters and Ph.D. level in Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Medical Education, and Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact; as well as post-residency opportunities in Transfusion Medicine, Thromboembolism, Bleeding Disorders and Red Cell Disorders.

The Division has a Hematology Residency Program and an Adult Thrombosis Medicine Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Program. Our faculty are also major contributors to the Transfusion Medicine AFC Program, which is housed in the Department of Pathology & Molecular Medicine. All three programs underwent successful Internal Reviews in the past year. The Adult Thrombosis Medicine AFC Program graduated its first diplomate, Dr. Marie-Pier Arsenault, a general internist now practicing at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont, Montreal, Quebec.

The McMaster Update in Thrombosis and Irwin Walker Day in Blood & Marrow Transplant are regularly-presented Continuing Health Sciences Education conferences. Many of the Division’s thrombosis faculty have leadership roles in Thrombosis Canada, which works to promote excellent patient care and improved outcomes, for patients with thrombosis, through high-quality knowledge translation, educational resources and point-of-care guidance for diverse groups of healthcare professionals while delivering education for patients and the general public.
