The division has achieved worldwide recognition for its research in thrombosis and hemostasis, platelet physiology and function, blood transfusion therapy, the molecular biology of red cell disorders and clinical trials in malignant hematologic diseases. There are two research organizations, the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI), directed by Dr. Jeffrey Weitz, and the McMaster Centre for Transfusion Research, directed by Dr. Donnie Arnold, devoted to hematology research. Many of our faculty are involved in the development of national and international clinical practice guidelines. Several faculty hold Endowed Chairs. Funding for our research comes from a variety of sources, including Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Blood Services and Hamilton Health Sciences. During the past year, division members were responsible for publications in leading journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Hematology, Annals of Internal Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), JAMA Internal Medicine, British Journal of Hematology, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Blood. Three of our faculty, Dr. Jeffrey Weitz, Dr. John Eikelboom and Dr. Mark Crowther, were included on the 2019 list of the world’s most-cited researchers.

The division continues to recruit both research-educators and clinician-educations who will contribute to and enhance our clinical, educational and research strengths. We look to utilize our local, national and international relationships to forward our research and educational missions. The benign and malignant hematology services across the city continue to work together with local family physician groups to adopt standardized triage and referral pathways to effectively manage increasing service demands. Our division has proven itself to be remarkably adaptable in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic with outpatient clinics and teaching sessions moving to virtual platforms in a short time and our researchers able to achieve funding success in special research competitions.
