Infectious Diseases – Research

Dr. Smaill is the Principal Investigator of two CIHR-funded studies on the safety and immunogenicity of a second generation COVID-19 vaccine delivered by inhaled aerosol to humans.

Dr. Khan’s research areas of focus are on antibiotic stewardship, infection prevention and control and HIV and infant feeding.  She is currently funded by Hamilton Health Sciences to study antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent post-procedure urinary tract infection after voiding cystourethrogram.

Dr. Loeb has funding through a CIHR Foundation Grant where the focus is to conduct an ongoing longitudinal cohort study in Hutterite communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The research is currently assessing COVID-19 vaccine and natural immunity in children to prevent transmission. As part of the Foundation grant, analyses are ongoing to assess the effect of previous immunity on risk of influenza. He is also leading a CIHR funded cluster randomized trial of the Bavarian Nordic smallpox vaccine to present PCR-confirmed mpox in household contacts of mpox cases in Nigeria. Finally, he is the principal investigator of a CIHR funded cohort study of patients with Lyme disease.

Dr. Haider is the Lead and Developer for the CANMUS registry (Canadian Mucormycosis Registry) where the aim is to define the epidemiology and speciation of mucormycosis, treatment, and outcomes. Dr Haider is a coinvestigator in key landmark trials in HIV therapeutics, HIV/HCV coinfection and a coinvestigator on key landmark global clinical trials in antifungal and antiviral therapeutics in Transplant Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Mertz continuous his work on a multi-site cluster randomized trial of antibiotic prophylaxis for cardiac surgery with close to 10,000 patients enrolled to date. Furthermore, he is leading a research program on C. difficile colonization and prevention of C. difficile infections.
