The Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Fellowship at McMaster University is a mentored training program of one year for fellows who have a strong interest in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and wish to pursue a period of specialized training.

With an emphasis on clinical and/or translational patient-oriented clinical investigation, the Fellow will have access to approximately 500 patients with SLE locally and patient education events across Ontario and Canada.

During the Fellowship, the Fellow will participate in all aspects of the SLE program including:

  1. Ambulatory clinics.
  2. Interpreting laboratory results and diagnostic imaging tests.
  3. Developing proficiency in assessing disease activity based on structured indices.
  4. Developing a research question to investigate aspects of SLE either through local research or through collaborations with other SLE clinics in Ontario.
  5. Contribute to the development of educational materials and programs to assist with patient and physician awareness and education.

Certification Outcome

Successful completion of the fellowship will be recognized with a Fellowship McMaster Certification.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have completed an MD (or equivalent), Internal Medicine training and/or postgraduate Fellowship in Rheumatology, with the expectation of full certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent).

Application Deadline

The application deadline is 9-12 months prior to start date.

Goals of Training

The goals and specific objectives of the SLE Fellowship are to:

  • Acquire expertise in the assessment and management of various forms of systemic lupus erythematosus and related disorders.
  • Become more familiar in recognizing complications of SLE and collaborating with associated subspecialties to manage them (i.e., working with nephrologists to manage lupus nephritis).
  • Expand knowledge of the medications used to treat SLE.
  • Become more familiar with the major unmet research needs in SLE, and participate in a research project.
  • Opportunities to become involved in teaching medical students and clinical clerks.

Length of Training

The duration of this fellowship is 1 year.
