RHEUMATOLOGY
Residency Program at McMaster
Welcome to McMaster’s Rheumatology Subspecialty Residency Program for the training of PGY4 and PGY5 residents after completion of core Internal Medicine. The program is designed to give residents full exposure to all types of rheumatologic conditions. The specific objectives are tailored to meet the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada competencies, to ensure that the residents who complete the training program are skilled and knowledgeable regarding clinical and laboratory aspects of rheumatologic disorders.
Welcome
The program is designed to give intense clinical exposure to all rheumatologic problems. The residents will rotate through a variety of clinics at McMaster University system which serves as the basis of the program. In addition, the resident will spend time on the city-wide inpatient service, covering three tertiary care hospitals in Hamilton, seeing a variety of inpatient consults and triaging urgent outpatient referrals. The McMaster University medical services serve as a referral base for the catchment areas that include the Niagara, Guelph, and Brantford regions and environs.
Residents will spend time in multiple outpatient clinics, both in academic and community environments. These include the following varieties of clinics:
- General Rheumatology
Metabolic bone disease
- Vasculitis
- Lupus
Combined Respirology/Rheumatology
- Combined Respirology/Renal/Rheumatology
- Combined Neurology/Rheumatology
- Paediatric Rheumatology
In addition, there are two weeks dedicated each year to rotation in musculoskeletal radiology, as well as dedicated time for research projects and electives.
Residents will have time to attend local educational events and international conferences.
Entry Requirements
All residents to be considered for training in Rheumatology at McMaster must have three years of training in an approved Internal Medicine Residency Training Program.

Program Overview
The Adult Rheumatology program is designed to provide residents with training that ensures flexibility in their future career choices in Rheumatology.
The specific objectives of the program follow the RCPSC Rheumatology Competencies, and it is expected that successful achievement of these competencies will build a foundation of knowledge and experience required for a successful career in clinical and/or academic Rheumatology.
The competencies ensure that at the end of the training, the resident will be proficient in all the CanMeds roles including Medical Expert, Professional, Manager, Communicator, Collaborator, and Health Advocate.
