Obstetric Medicine
The development of a multi-disciplinary clinical, research and academic initiative in obstetric medicine (maternal medicine) focuses on innovative models of care provision, interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge translation. This CoP will emphasize linkages with other CoP’s and local maternal and obstetric care providers to amplify shared priorities. It will include members from the Departments of Medicine, Obstetrics, Family Practice and Midwifery.
Mission
To transform the care provided to all women with medical conditions in pregnancy in Hamilton through innovative collaborative care, generating research to inform practice and improve outcomes and creating future leaders in maternal medicine through engaging and inclusive education.
- We leverage our broad network of obstetric medicine specialists to provide exceptional collaborative care
- We foster interdisciplinary research and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives to improve antenatal and postpartum outcomes
- We use our clinical and research platforms to facilitate life-long learning for trainees and faculty
- We utilize pregnancy and postpartum windows as opportunity to effect change in long-term women’s health
- We place an urgent clinical focus on vulnerable populations most likely to lose health care access and disproportionately suffer adverse obstetrical events (BIPOC, PUD, homeless)
Moonshot Goal
By 2035, we have established an international-renowned interdisciplinary academic and clinical practice approach, providing comprehensive maternal medical care throughout the preconception, antenatal and postpartum period.
Our overarching clinical goal is to place all women with medical conditions of pregnancy in the center of their care circle. We will accomplish this goal by developing a seamless network of clinicians providing individualized medical care, leveraging digital/virtual technology and fostering a strong community and academic partnerships.
Our specific, measurable clinical goals are in the following areas of care:
- Preconception
- Antenatal
- Postpartum
The short-term focus in each area will be on high-obstetric risk medical conditions or those requiring multiple specialty care providers. It will expand to capture low-medium obstetric risk medical conditions in the medium term.

Given the unprecedented pace and scale of change in the requisite mechanism of healthcare delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic, all faculty within the Department of Medicine (DoM) have been obligated to rapidly adapt to marked changes in both clinical and academic domains of their faculty appointment. In the absence of standardized and, ideally, validated approaches to the integration of virtual care into clinical practice and academia, significant heterogeneity with possible suboptimal outcomes has likely occurred. As such, the current CoP proposal encompasses the systematic assessment, standardization and optimization of virtual various activities in both clinical and academic domains within the DoM.
