Welcome to the Amputee Rehabilitation Fellowship program at McMaster University.

Clinical Training Experiences:

  • Manage the inpatient and Medical Day Care amputee rehab patients.
  • Attend all outpatient prosthetics and orthotic clinics with Dr. Grad and Dr. Lin.
  • See inpatient/outpatient consults.
  • Lead team conferences and family meetings.
  • Complete forms/paperwork for patients related to return to school/work.
  • Collaborate with the amputee rehabilitation team.
  • Teach junior learners.

Educational Content:

  • Discuss componentry and merits of specific knee, hip, elbow, and wrist units.
  • Osseointegration.
  • Multiple limb amputees.
  • Pediatric prosthetics and orthoses.
  • Manage complications related to amputation.

Intrinsic CanMEDs Content:

  • Communicate news that a patient is not a prosthetic candidate.
  • Managing a situation where a patient is aggressive or abusive to staff.
  • Perform a literature review for pertinent topics.
  • Work collaboratively on a research project.
  • Advocacy for marginalized patients.
  • Collaborate with colleagues/team members.

Research Content:

  • Search for new evidence-based medicine related to patient management.
  • Participate in scholarly research or quality improvement project.

Certification Outcome

The successful completion of the fellowship will grant a Fellowship McMaster Certification.

Entry Requirements

Completion of a recognized accredited Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program.

Application Deadline

8-12 Months prior to the start date.

Goals of Training

The aim of the Amputee Rehabilitation/Physiatry rotation is to provide educational opportunities in the investigation and prosthetic and orthotic management of individuals with a wide variety of medical diseases. The trainee will have the opportunity to develop consultative skills in acute care inpatient wards at Hamilton General Hospital and on inpatient and outpatient settings at Regional Rehabilitation Centre.

  1. The trainee will acquire a confident and effective approach to clinical data gathering, diagnosis, and management of patients with medical diseases in the adult population.
  2. The trainee will learn the basics of physiology and the pathophysiological mechanisms of common disease processes.
  3. The trainee will acquire the critical skills needed in the management of patients with the medical disease during the acute phase of illness.
  4. The trainee will have the opportunity to gain consecutive experience from initial assessment and continuing care of admitted medical patients, whenever possible. The resident will acquire competence in ensuring appropriate follow-up for patients with primary care providers and any appropriate specialist care.
  5. The trainee will acquire the basic technical experience needed in the care of amputees and orthotic patients.
  6. The trainee will further develop the communication, collaboration, and professional skills necessary to become an effective consultant.
  7. The trainee will develop skills in ultrasound-guided injection techniques to manage musculoskeletal issues related to prosthetic and orthotic patients.

12 months.

Supervision & Feedback

Clinical Rotation and Faculty evaluations will be distributed to the learner via MedSIS every 3 months. 360 evaluations based on clinical encounters/procedures/presentations. End of Fellowship meeting with Supervisor.
