The practice of infectious diseases touches every aspect of the practice of medicine. At McMaster University, we are committed to training residents to become competent, independent and thoughtful infectious diseases consultants. The resident will master critical analysis of the scientific literature and the ability to apply it, in order to provide compassionate, patient-centred care, and to maintain lifelong learning skills. Residents will understand that, in the field of infectious diseases, there may be more than one approach to any given problem and will learn how to look at available literature to make an informed decision for a specific patient. Our curriculum encompasses a multidisciplinary approach to both inpatient and outpatient care and fosters interactions with other health professionals involved in infectious diseases including medical microbiology, pharmacy, Infection Prevention and Control, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Public Health.

The infectious diseases residency program has strong ties to the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Diseases Research as well as leading researchers in the field. Residents participate in the annual medical subspecialty research day and are encouraged to join the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease and participate in national as well as local committees.
