Welcome
McMaster University provides excellent clinical exposure to broad areas of perioperative vascular medicine including:
- preoperative risk assessment
- risk modification
- perioperative monitoring
- management of perioperative arrhythmias
- myocardial infarction
- congestive heart failure
- venous thrombotic events
The Training program also offers instruction from global leaders in perioperative medicine, cardiology, thrombosis and GIM.
Certification Outcome
The successful completion of the fellowship will grant a Fellowship McMaster Certification.
Entry Requirements
The fellowship program is designed for current residents or recent graduates of General Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Anesthesia or Surgical residency programs. Recent graduates are required to submit an application form and comply with McMaster University Postgraduate Medical Education requirements for residents and fellows.
Application Deadline
Applicants are requested to submit requests a minimum of 9 months prior to the anticipated start date to allow sufficient time for PGME, and CPSO approvals (as well as VISA approvals for international applicants)
Goals of Training
Upon the completion of training the trainee is expected to be competent in the following:
- Preoperative risk assessment, test ordering, and medical optimization
- Impact of emergency surgery on outcomes and whether this is modifiable
- How intraoperative and PACU care influences perioperative complications
- Management of perioperative hemodynamics
- Postoperative management including follow-up as well as management of various postoperative complications including infection, bleeding and vascular complications
- Transition and monitoring of the postoperative patient from the hospital into home setting post-discharge
Length of Training
Trainees can select between 6-12 months duration.
Funding
Trainees are generally funded by their home university.
Successful applicants are provided with letters of support for grant applications upon request.
Curriculum Highlights
Program Highlights include:
- A comprehensive perioperative vascular clinical, educational and research program tailored to meet trainees’ individual interests and the Royal College Perioperative Medicine learning objectives.
- Two teaching sessions per week:
- Tuesday Case Rounds led by the Trainee
- Thursday Rounds led by the Attending
- Perioperative journal club.
- Monthly challenging case rounds.
- Perioperative clinics in Cardiology, Hematology and GIM for risk stratification, diagnostic testing or initiation of treatment.
- In-patient Perioperative Service allows for the co-management of surgical patients and close monitoring of high-risk patients in the CCU post-operatively.
- Postoperative ambulatory clinics for outpatient follow-up of patients who suffer perioperative vascular complications.
- Participation in several, active international randomized controlled trials focused on perioperative medicine, including:
- Exposure to study design, site recruitment, implementation and data collection,
- Patient recruitment,
- Data analysis and review,
- Manuscript preparation.
The amount of time devoted to clinical vs research interests will vary depending on the interests, experience and career goals for individual trainees. This can be discussed in detail with Dr. Tandon, the Fellowship Program Director. A 2-year MSc in Health Research Methodology is available for interested trainees who wish to extend their time at McMaster or pursue this degree concurrently.
Supervision & Feedback
Verbal and formal evaluations will be provided to the fellow every 3 months.
