Cardiology

Division of the Department of Medicine at McMaster

The Division of Cardiology is active at four hospital sites in Hamilton where cardiologists provide care, including specialty services, through the Heart Investigation Unit, the Arrhythmia Service, the Heart Function Clinic and the Vascular Medicine Clinic. In addition, the Adult Congenital Cardiac Clinic provides services to patients with complex cardiac issues and patients with high-risk pregnancies due to heart disease.

The Cardiology Division continues a leading role in cardiovascular research. It is associated closely with the Population Health Research Institute. Major research programs within the division include clinical trials, epidemiology and laboratory-based studies on the major factors affecting cardiovascular health. These studies will have a large impact on the understanding and treatment of almost all aspects of cardiac and cardiovascular risk factors and diseases. A major strength of the division continues to be the mentorship of junior colleagues.

The division participates actively in undergraduate MD teaching and the training of residents in cardiology, internal medicine, anesthesia, family practice, emergency medicine, cardiac surgery and critical care. The presence of a comprehensive structured training program consisting of balanced clinical and laboratory training (cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology) as well as daily rounds, has contributed to our strength in attracting leading applicants.
