Dr. Imran Satia Wins Career Award

Congratulations  to Dr. Imran Satia, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, on winning one of the Department’s Career Awards. He was appointed Assistant Professor in the Division of Respirology effective July 2020.

Dr. Satia completed his undergraduate and post-graduate training in the UK at University of Cambridge. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Neurophysiology in 2003, an MBBChir in Medicine and Surgery in 2006 and an M.A. in Neurophysiology from in 2007. In addition, he completed his PGY 1-2 years as a Foundation Trainee at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, PGY 2-4 years as a Core Medical Trainee at North Western Deanery and his PGY 5-7 years as a Specialist Registrar in Respiratory and Internal Medicine in Manchester. Dr. Satia also pursued a Clinical Research Fellowship at University of Manchester from 2013-2017 during which time he completed a PHD on the role of nerves in asthma; insights from the study of cough.  He completed his PGY 8-9 years in Manchester as a Specialist Registrar (Respiratory and Internal Medicine).

Dr. Satia has won a number of honours and awards. He was awarded the Marie-Curie fellowship from the European Respiratory Society to obtain advanced research training at McMaster and, in January 2018 began a two year clinical Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Paul O’Byrne. Most recently, he received the McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences Postdoctoral Travel Award and the American Thoracic Society Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Best Abstract Award.

Dr. Satia has published 48 peer-reviewed papers and is first or senior author on 26 of these. He is ranked number 2 in Canada for expertise in cough research (expertscape.com) and is the chair of the national scientific advisory committee for chronic cough led by Respiplus. He  is currently an Associate Editor for the European Respiratory Journal Open Research and has served as a journal referee for a number of high impact journals.
