Dr. Carmen Venegas Garrido awarded the Hargreave Clinical Research Fellowship for 2022
Dr. Carmen Venegas Garrido is the recipient of the 2022 Frederick Hargreave Clinical Research Fellowship. She completed her training as an internist and respirologist at Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, from where she graduated with honors in 2015. During her training, she participated as primary investigator and co-investigator in research projects on lung physiology and pulmonary infections and pursued an elective in Severe Asthma and Allergic Diseases at Hospital María Ferrer in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Subsequently, she worked for four years as an assistant professor in the clinical educator stream in the Respiratory Medicine Department of the Pontifical Catholic University’s Faculty of Medicine and was a full-time attending physician providing both in-patient and out-patient services. During this time, she developed her home institution’s first Severe Asthma Program and led a multi-disciplinary group to treat patients with various airway diseases. Since 2019, she has been training in severe asthma and complex airway diseases in Professor Nair’s research program. As a Hargreave Fellow, Dr. Venegas Garrido will start a master’s in medical sciences at McMaster University, focusing on translational research in functional imaging in asthma. Her primary objective is to investigate the use of novel imaging techniques as potential biomarkers and contribute to respiratory patients’ care by providing a comprehensive understanding of pulmonary pathophysiology. This fellowship is funded by an unrestricted grant from GlaxoSmithKline Canada.
