The EM Clerkship features a 4-week clinical rotation exposing clerks to a variety of patient complaints in a number of settings. In addition to clinical training in emergency medicine, our faculty boast a number of interests including medical education, QI, simulation, trauma, ICU, pre-hospital care, addictions, anesthesia, and hold a number of clinical and administrative positions in the university and hospital networks.
Clerks will have an opportunity to work with a number of staff and are encouraged to connect with them to find out more about a career in emergency medicine. Many clerks also find opportunities to work with faculty on projects and funding opportunities (including our EM Clerkship Research Award) exist for both faculty and learners.
Even if you are not interested in pursuing a full career, the skills acquired in emergency medicine include the rapid assessment and treatment of critically ill patients, generating a differential and approach for undifferentiated patients and understanding the flow and role of the emergency department in the healthcare setting.
Despite the challenges that the covid-19 pandemic has placed on our faculty as frontline health care providers, our interdisciplinary teaching environments continue to remain committed to the training of learners from many disciplines. Students work with a variety of healthcare workers and realize the importance of team-based care.
Our team has contributed to numerous innovative solutions including Case-Based Asynchronous Learning via Slack, using video in-situ simulation for protected intubation and serving as a pilot site for the virtualresusroom.com. We also actively support podcasts including the MacEmerg podcast, the MacPFD Spark and the Clerkcast Podcast.

EM Clerkship Sites include community and academic sites across the mac-care network. These include the Hamilton General Hospital, Juravinski Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Joseph Brant Hospital, Brantford General Hospital, Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Norfolk General Hospital, and Milton District Hospital.
