Nephrology – Nephrology Home Dialysis Fellowship

  1. Clinical Training Program
    1. Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)
      1. Provide exposure and experience in PD catheter insertion and management.
      2. Longitudinal monitoring of PD patients in clinics.
      3. Overseeing the PD maintenance Clinic.
      4. Consultant to inpatient PD-associated issues.
  2. Home Hemodialysis (HHD)
    1. Attendance at vascular access clinics and rounds.
    2. Review of HHD machines.
    3. Longitudinal monitoring of HHD patients in clinics.
    4. Overseeing the HHD Urgent Clinic.
  3. Clinical Expectations
    1. Attendance at clinics.
    2. Weekend second call every second block.
    3. Attendance at administrative meetings.
  4. Administration of Independent Modalities Program
    1. To develop expertise in program management and evaluation.
    2. To learn to evaluate the Independent Modalities Program, implement novel ideas and consider resource allocation.
    3. Participate in Kidney Urinary Program Committee and Dialysis Committee meetings.
  5. Research and/or Quality Assurance Project
    1. A project in the area of independent dialysis modalities will be completed in association with a research/QIPS mentor.
  6. Teaching and Education
    1. The provision of education to junior physicians and interprofessionals in regard to independent modalities.
    2. Ongoing development of patient education programs.
    3. The trainee will obtain teaching experience via the provision of lectures to nursing staff and core nephrology trainees.
    4. Academic half-day – case-based format every two weeks.

Entry requirements

The Home Dialysis fellowship program is designed for individuals who have graduated or will be graduating in the upcoming academic year from an Adult Nephrology residency program. For graduates from Canadian and foreign nephrology training programs, please provide the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV/Resume).
  • Source of funding.
  • Letter of interest indicating reasons for wishing to train at McMaster in Nephrology and how this fellowship training will meet your career goals.

Application deadline

6-9 months prior to the start date.

Certification outcome

The successful completion of the fellowship will grant a McMaster Fellowship Certification.

Main objectives of the Home Dialysis Fellowship Program:

Home Hemodialysis Fellowship Goals

The Division of Nephrology at McMaster University offers a one-year residency training program in home dialysis therapies (peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis). The aim of this fellowship program is to provide:

  1. Focused training in clinical training and development of proficiency related to home therapies in dialysis.
  2. Develop skills in administering a home therapy program.
  3. Opportunity to develop knowledge and skill in a home therapies specific area by participating in or leading research and/or quality assurance project.

Objectives

  • To develop expertise in the delivery of home-based therapies (PD and home hemodialysis) through extended exposure to large cohorts of patients, clinical circumstances and administrative activities.
  • To gain exposure to adult home dialysis programs and integrate these into general nephrology care.
  • Opportunities for novel facility-based independent HD modalities.
  • To develop expertise in program management and evaluation.
  • To gain an understanding of program development, implementation and resource allocation issues in-home therapies.

Length of training: 1 year.
